A crash from below accompanied by a yowling cat broke the kiss. Lumine felt dizzy, either from lack of breath or from the kiss itself—it was impossible to tell. Xiao’s breath was hot against her lips, the taste of his kiss lingering on her tongue.“Qing,” Xiao said softly. Lumine didn’t respond immediately, her thoughts ticking slowly as she tried to catch her breath.“What?” She managed at last, opening her eyes when Xiao’s face moved away. She wanted it back. She wanted their kiss to resume.“Downstairs,” he said, then shook his head slightly, “I think she’s giving Wenyan a hard time.”“Oh,” she said, eyes still fixated on his lips. Had it been real? Yes. It must have been real.Xiao sighed lightly, his fingers tracing the edge of her face. She met his eyes, heart thudding at the fervor in them.“I should start preparing the food for tonight. Wenyan has a lot of important guests. I assured him I would be able to assist with dinner,” he said, his explanation tinged with regret. Regret because he had something he’d rather do? The idea made Lumine blush.“He wasn’t even sure you would be back tonight,” she said, halfway hoping the knowledge would convince him to hide his presence. He chuckled, his fingers running through her hair and making her lashes flutter.“If I’d known you would be here perhaps I could have returned more secretively,” he said, already understanding her implication, “but the staff have seen me. He’ll know I’ve returned, which means he’ll be relying on my promised assistance.”Lumine looked into his eyes again, unsure if she looked as pitiful and desperate as she felt. “Do I have to leave?”Xiao’s gaze was intoxicating in its tenderness. “I will not send you away. But I cannot imagine watching me cook will be very interesting.”Lumine disagreed heartily, and expressed as much, so Xiao allowed her to accompany him to the kitchen. She stayed out of his way, assisting in whatever tiny ways he allowed or requested. When it came time to serve, the sun was drifting toward the horizon.“I believe someone is looking for you,” Xiao said, then nodded toward one of the covered plates on the counter beside her. “Would you mind taking that first dish down?”“Sure,” she said, suddenly remembering what Aldric had said about finding her at sundown.“Thank you. I’ll see you in the morning,” he said, his golden eyes nearly making Lumine’s mind go blank. She nodded mutely, curious what their morning conversation could consist of. Would it even be a conversation, or…?Curator Wenyan and his guests were grateful for the food she brought them, and as expected Aldric caught sight of her as soon as she set it down. She joined him by the stairs of the lower deck.“Working part time in the kitchens?” He asked in a teasing voice. She shook her head with a smile.“Just wanted to be helpful,” she said. She wanted to tell him about Xiao, but the words caught in her throat.“And how was your walk?” He asked. She looked back at the curator’s table, though she wasn’t sure why she felt like she needed to hide her expression from Aldric.“It was nice,” she said simply. She looked back at him before he could ask more questions. “We can cook our own dinner in the guesthouse, right?”Aldric raised his brow at her. “Sure. Missing our campfire meals already?”She rolled her eyes, turning him around and pushing him along the path to the house.“And what if I am?” She said playfully. Aldric laughed, obediently walking ahead of her; Lumine’s gaze turned back up toward the upper balcony and the kitchen where Xiao still worked. Her lips tingled with the memory of his, already anxious for their next meeting.
